License's Effect

So what do you think about them taking your driver’s license if you are not having good grades in school? I believe that is a good idea, because a lot of kids are not really focused on school work. I also believe that if parents are going to be buying their kids cars they need to also be responsible for some of the fault. Having the attendance a part of taking the license is also a good idea, because a lot of kids don’t even bother getting up and going to school. A lot of teens might actually get mad, but it is their own fault for not caring for their grades. If teens are not mature enough to come to school and do their work then they don’t need to have their license. Maybe if parents could keep a better eye on their kids now days there would not be a many problems.

  1. Erica, this is a really interesting blog that you wrote. I never heard of states taking away a driver's license of a young person if their grades are not good. I think the whole issue of student achievement is important, especially in our country. It is important that our schools prepare our young people to be tomorrow's leaders, whether it's in business, government, or in community organizations. I think that punishing students for not doing well in school by taking away their driving priveleges is one approach that could work, but I also think we need to have more incentives for students to do well and rewards for students who do things like maintain a good grade point average, who volunteer in their communities, etc... And I agree that the role of parents is critically important.

  2. I have mixed emotions about states being able to take away a student's driver's license. I think it is imperative for students to stay in school to develop skills they will need to not only be successful in the future, but to survive in today's world. As David said, parents do have a critical role in their children's education, but they cannot be held solely responsible. As a student it is also your responsibility not only to show up for class, but to actively participate. All of that being said, I do not believe taking a student's license for bad grades is a good idea. Some students really are trying their best to get the grades and still fail. Some students have children and need a license to be able to get their children to and from doctor appointments, school functions, etc. Some students work to help support their families and themselves. I believe if we start taking aways driver's license from students with poor grades it becomes a slippery slope...do we start taking licenses from adults that do not contribute enough to society. I am interested in what your classmates have to say about this topic.
